A new SAHAAS publication

By John Cox & Ann Dean

The Society is pleased to announce the publication of The Street Memorials of the St Albans Abbey Parish. Erected in the early 1920s, this unique collection of memorials commemorates 110 men who lived in the streets around St Albans Cathedral and died in the First World War.

The book records the history of the memorials set against the background of local life at the time. Add in the results of our research into the stories of the men and readers will find the book to be a thought-provoking companion for anyone interested in the city's modern history.

Updated by John Cox and Ann Dean, this is a new edition of the book written by Alice Goodman and originally published by the Society in the 1980s.

This book is an ideal Christmas present for someone with an interest in local history or the First World War (or both).

The cost is £9 if bought from Waterstones in St Peter's Street, the Tourist Information Centre or the Cathedral Bookshop.

Members of the Society can buy copies at one of our lectures or at our library for £8.

For further information about the book and/or the memorials please email publicity@stalbanshistory.org

Please also see this article in the Herts Advertiser newspaper about the book.

The ten street memorials in this unique collection are as follows:

B = Bardwell Road

C = Fishpool Street

D = High Street

E = Holywell Hill

F = Lower Dagnall Street

G = Orchard Street

H = Pageant Road
